Desk-based study of a site proposed for a service station identified that fragments of prehistoric worked flint and a sherd of Romano-British pottery had previously been found at the site, and that at least one prehistoric enclosure had survived in the northern part of the study area prior to its destruction during recent widening of the A1. Little archaeological evidence of the early historic to medieval period survived in the surrounding area, although aerial photographs had shown traces of possible rig and furrow, suggesting medieval or post-medieval cultivation of the area. A geophysical survey was undertaken across 3.2ha of the proposal site, but significant anomalies were not identified. It was concluded that, although the possibility of discovering archaeological remains at the site could not be ruled out, it was unlikely that significant deposits would be threatened by the development.
